Look past the event name
Ask what the day will actually involve: course length, format, expected pace, age division and whether a parent can caddie or walk. A prestigious name alone does not tell you whether the event suits your child.
Make three comparisons
- Readiness: Does your child want this experience, and does their coach think the format is appropriate?
- Full cost: What will entry, travel, meals, lodging and any practice round add up to?
- Family value: Is there a nearby event offering the kind of experience your child needs right now?
Define a good day before the first tee
For a first event, a useful goal might be getting comfortable with the routine or finishing with a willingness to try again. Agree on expectations together. The day does not have to justify its cost through a score.
Check the organizer’s rules
Eligibility, caddie permissions, cancellation terms and equipment rules differ. Read the current event information rather than relying on another parent’s experience at a different tournament.
